Thats a good question. I used to know the answer to that haha… music can be a very unique form of expression. To say a “universal language†is probably a little cliche today but it does seem to me like some vestigial language or maybe a 4th dimensional connection of sorts… that can express things that can’t really be communicated in any other way.
Et si tu n’avais pas fait de musique ? And if music wasn’t your thing?
I’m not sure such a reality exists… I’ve gone through periods where I tried not to listen to music but it was often sad and frustrating times. I also like photography, cinematography, storytelling, and filmmaking … but it’s all kind of music to me.
At some point I had to question why I do any of this… because I’ve lost interest in ego aggrandizing and it never felt rewarding to me to put persona or celebrity over all the possibilities of what can still be real or true. Humans are inherently flawed and at some level it’s all bullshit, but there are still sacred places left. If not in material form than at least a state of mind. Not that I don’t accept all theses realities as a necessity of our world today…. it just didn’t seem right that I focus my energies in those directions. If you believe music is sacred and can transcend the normal world we live in… where do you possibly go from there…
Almost everything I do is improvisational and I tend to write and experiment through live shows. Once the set gets laid down to tape I often scrap everything and start over. It helps keep it from getting mechanical or boring. It helps to think of places (real or imagined) that inspire me; Just to remember why I’m doing this… but with that said… pounding tropical vodka shots has also been an effective pre- and during-show ritual this year haha
Avec qui aimerais-tu travailler (musique et hors musique) ? Who would you work with (musically or not)?
C’est difficile à dire, je respecte le travail de beaucoup d’artistes et je m’inspire de nombreuses choses mais je suis de plutôt de nature solitaire.
Not sure… I respect the work of lots of people and many things have inspired me but I am kind of a loner by nature.
Quel serait le climax de ta carrière artistique ? What would be the climax of your career?
At this point I think a 12†inch record would be the climax of wave temples… but it’s hard to say… it could be a live recording in Malta… Bimini… or atop a Mayan pyramid maybe… who knows?! I find myself caught up in a sometimes strange and mysterious path.
Retour à l’enfance, quel conseil te donnes–tu ? Back to your childhood – what piece of advice would you give your young self?
I guess… always listen to your intuition and have more faith in the ways of things… not to be so easily seduced by the destroyer… but I am also recovering from one of those moments where it seems like life couldn’t have gone any other way so it’s hard to say for sure.
Comment te vois tu dans trente ans ? How do you see yourself thirty years from now?
I’m really at a crossroads right now actually. Infantile to a whole new phase of life… but I do constantly wrestle with the urge to withdraw… I could see music becoming even more of a personal escape.
Hmmm…. I’ve become kind of a hedonist these past 7 years haha… not a big fan of guilt, but I’m all for pleasure.
As far as hidden treasure, my wife and I recently purchased a rundown bungalow estate designed in a post-memphis style key west vibe that we have dubbed Hawaiki – to us meaning “home  It’s fairly hidden and quite a modest treasure considering. Aside from getting more and more into exotic plants and architecture, this place has provided a great deal of purpose while floating idle on the shores of the next adventure.
