Comment ne pas être séduit d’emblée par la manière élégante, intelligente et diablement efficace d’allier la sensualité et la chaleur à la nonchalance coldwave… Un bel avenir se profile à l’horizon électro dark du groupe de Los Angeles mené par le charismatique Scott, qui passe un peu de baume apaisant sur notre vive impatience en répondant à nos questions et en nous offrant une magnifique mixtape à son image d’amoureux de pop minimaliste et de sons électroniques rétros et contemporains.

C’est une question compliquée, haha ! Eh bien, je suis un compositeur, basé à L.A., originaire de la Côte Est, et je fais de mon mieux pour survivre comme tout le monde… Haha !

Il y en a tant, comme Bowie, Ian Curtis, Lennon, Mark Burgess, Gary Neuman, Gore/Gahan, Liz Frasier, Sisters Of Mercy, Siouxsie, Cure, Kraftwerk, Human League, etc.

How would you define The Present Moment?
J’aime définir ce projet en me fondant sur la signification de son patronyme : un gros plan sur le PRÉSENT. Nous essayons de lever notre chapeau au passé tout en étant pertinents pour l’avenir. TPM est essentiellement un groupe de néo-romantico-électro-coldwave, en termes de genres passés. Maintenant, nous sommes étiquetés witchhouse, FM (Fog Music) gravewave…mais pour moi, c’est juste de l’électro sexy sombre !
I like to define it on terms of what the name of the band is-a focus on the NOW. We try to tip our hats to the past and be just as relevant to the future when it comes to making music. TPM is really an electro-coldwave, new romantic band basically, in terms of past genres. Now the powers that be are putting us under new tags such as Witchhouse, FM (Fog Music) Gravewave whatever….to me it’s just dark sexy electro!

What will be the main thread of the new Present Moment’s album?
Je pense qu’il y a avant tout un fil conducteur au niveau de l’écriture biographique des derniers événements (à la saveur douce amère) qui se sont produits dans ma vie cette année. C’est principalement fondé sur la reconstruction, le détachement et sur les tribulations des relations, des amants, amis et autres.
I think primarily there is a thread lyrically going on which is very auto biographical to my life and my experiences in the last year-it’s been bittersweet-it’s mainly about reinvention, letting go and about the trials and tribulations of relationships, lovers, friends or otherwise.
Dis-m’en plus sur les membres du groupe et sur le processus de création… Qui fait quoi dans the Present Moment ?
Tell me about the band members and the creative process… Who makes what in the Present Moment?
C’est Philipp Munch de The Rorschach Garden et moi qui nous occupons de l’aspect créatif de l’album qui sortira sur le label Mannequin Records. Le processus créatif est relativement simple. Je commence un beat, j’ajoute une ligne de basse et je trouve quelque chose à chanter. La mélodie est la clé pour la voix et à partir de là je sens s’il y a quelque chose de spécial qui en ressort. Il ne faut rien forcer, ça doit couler tout seul ; il faut juste apporter des améliorations et réajuster le tir en cours de route.
Pour le groupe live que j’ai formé, il y a Isul Kim à la basse qui est un artiste solo et aussi membre du groupe Song Of The Siren, et Garey Snider qui a bossé avec Scarling, Crispen Glover et joue avec Sleepmask à L.A. aussi.
As far as the creative aspects of making this record it’s been myself and Philipp Munch from The Rorschach Garden collaborating for the new album coming out on Mannequin Records. the creative process is quite simple, I get up, put on a drum machine, lay down some bass lines and find something to sing about-melody is key on the vox and from that point I will know if there is something special coming out of it. It can’t be forced it just has to flow and you make adjustments and define it along the way.
For the LIVE band I put together it’s Isul Kim on Bass who is solo artist in her own right and from Song Of The Siren fame and Garey Snider who’s worked with Scarling, Crispen Glover and performs with Sleepmask in L.A as well.
Comment en es-tu arrivé à vouloir sortir ton nouvel album sur un label européen, le label italien Mannequin ?
How does it come that you decided to release your new album through an European label (the Italian Mannequin label)?
Bien, c’est un disque minimaliste électro que nous préparons donc j’ai pensé que Mannequin serait le label idéal pour représenter le disque et le faire marcher !
Well this is a very minimal synth record, so I thought that Mannequin would be the perfect home to represent and work the record!
Es-tu attaché à un support audio en particulier ?
Are you attached to one audio format in particular?
Non, pas vraiment, tout support qui véhicule la musique et l’amène entre les mains des auditeurs me convient. Mais rien ne bat le vinyle en termes d’artwork, pour moi c’est un format à part.
No not really, whatever gets our music into peoples hands in whichever format works for me. But nothing beats vinyl in regards to artwork, for me that’s a special thing!
Tu aimes jouer sur scène ? Tu prépares une tournée en Europe ?
Do you enjoy touring? Are you planning to tour in Europe soon?
Nous sommes actuellement en train de mettre au point les détails d’une tournée… Et oui, nous prenons beaucoup de plaisir à jouer. Nous avons eu le plaisir de partager l’affiche de Light Asylum, Salem, Gatekeeper, Iron Curtain, pour en nommer quelques-uns…

TPM était d’abord une aventure solo, j’ai joué dans un groupe appelé Catalog pendant des années avec mon meilleur ami à L.A. et nous avons fait un break, puis j’ai créé le premier disque de The Present Moment dans mon home studio qui est d’abord sorti sur Disaro Records puis par Desire France qui a sorti un magnifique picture disc, une édition spéciale pour nous ! Beaucoup de gens ignorent que je suis également un batteur professionnel et je joue avec Moodorgan à L.A.
This initially was a solo venture for me, I did a band called Catalog for years in LA with my best friend and we just took a break and I went and made the first Present Moment record at my home studio which first found a home with Disaro Records and then picked up by Desire France who did a beautiful picture disc vinyl pressing for us! Lot of people dont know that I’m a professional drummer as well and I currently perform with Moodorgan in LA.

Dernièrement, j’ai redécouvert et apprécié Talk Talk, c’est donc ce qui est le plus proche de mon cœur actuellement. Mark Hollis est un vocaliste et un songwriter fabuleux.
Lately I’ve been really re-discovering and loving Talk Talk so that’s who is really close to my heart now. Mark Hollis, amazing vocalist and songwriter.

La mixtape que je vous ai concoctée contient des morceaux d’électro minimaliste oubliés ainsi que des classiques.
This mixtape is me digging up some obscure lost minimal synth tracks and some classics as well.
Comment vois-tu ton futur, Scott ?
How do you see your future, Scott?
Et bien, j’aimerais que nous puissions tourner et continuer à faire des disques, nous sommes soutenus et je suis très optimiste au sujet du nouvel album et de l’avenir en général…
