What is becoming Gravenhurst? Are you still 100% active in this project?

Me forcer à travailler rapidement est contre-productif. Ce qui est sûr, c’est qu’il y aura un album en 2011.

Yes, absolutely.  The album I’m working on will be my sixth and it’s taken longer to write and record than previous ones for several reasons. I had a long period of ‘writer’s block’ where I couldn’t think of anything new or interesting to write about. This was a difficult period because creativity is an essential part of my sense of identity. I immersed myself in film and literature and gradually the block lifted and I was able to come up with new material. But I’m not rushing it; forcing myself to work quickly was counter-productive. There will be an album in 2011 though for sure.

As-tu d’autres projets ?
Do you have any other projects?

I’m sometimes involved in Bronnt Industries Kapital; Guy Bartell is the main man and I contribute material occasionally. The latest Bronnt album was released on Get Physical; it’s called Hard For Justice and I co-wrote a few of the tracks.
I also make ambient noise under the name Ex.1 Originally it was Exercise One, a name I have used since 1995 but a Berlin dance act started using it recently so I had to truncate the name to Ex.1… I’ve also been making dubstep but haven’t released any of it yet.

As-tu déjà pensé abandonner le projet Gravenhurst ? Si oui, quand ?
Have you ever thought of giving up this project? If yes, when?

I admit I have had periods of immense doubt and confusion. This is not because I’ve lost faith in the music, more that I find various aspects of being a musician problematic. I’m not a natural touring type, I find touring stressful. That said, I’m about to embark on a solo support tour with Paul Smith of Maxïmo Park and I have a really good vibe about it. I prefer to play solo, just because it means I have less to worry about. Many of the Gravenhurst band shows have been excellent. Some of them were fucking mind-blowing! And I’m sure I will put a band together again, but for now I’m enjoying the simplicity of solo shows. I don’t have to worry about monitoring and being able to hear my voice above the crashingly loud cymbals and guitars!

Have you grown up with musicians who influenced you?

I grew up listening to the music my Mum listened to; she is a massive Beatles fan, so the Beatles are infused in my very being. But Simon & Garfunkel influenced Gravenhurst more immediately than the Beatles. My Mum has a massive music collection so there are so many great bands and songwriters that have been soaked up sub-consciously. I also grew up listening to loads of synth-pop bands; especially Pet Shop Boys; they are fantastic. I’m also an Iron Maiden fan! But the band that changed my life was The Smiths. Johnny Marr is my guitar hero. I heard the Smiths at just the time I started playing guitar; my adolescence was a blur of The Smiths, Simon & Garfunkel, The Cure, Ride, R.E.M, My Bloody Valentine and a rollercoaster of crazy emotions… By the time I got to University in Bristol I was obsessed with Stereolab, Flying Saucer Attack and loads of lo-fi and Krautrock. I then got really into the Sandy Denny-era Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson, and Guided By Voices! Around the time I had my creative block I had got really into Elliott Smith, and I felt he raised the bar so high in terms of songwriting that I couldn’t compete. I lost confidence because he is so fucking good. But then some of his influence filtered through to my new songs and I gradually started writing again.

When precisely did you decide to dedicate your life to music? Do you remember what day it was?

I guess I was able to dedicate myself to music completely when I signed to Warp, cos then I was just about able to do it for a living. Before then I was scraping by running my own label Silent Age Records, but I was still at University studying a Masters in Philosophy and History of Science. Then the Warp deal came along and I chose music over a career in Academia. I miss Philosophy but I still read it anyway. If I completely run out of musical ideas maybe I could go back and finish my studies. But my manager Michelle always encourages me musically and insists I have more music in me, and she’s always right about everything so I’ll do what she says! I’ve come out of the creative block with four new songs finished, and Michelle thinks it’s the best work I’ve done to date, so I’ll be a musician for the forseeable future.

Comment écris-tu tes chansons ? As-tu déjà pensé à une collaboration ?
Can you describe the writing process of a song? Have you ever thought of co-writing your songs?

I’ve always worked alone and though I have many opportunities to write with other people I’ve never done it. Maybe sub-consciously I am avoiding it because it’s a new challenge and I’m afraid of trying new things. But the process I use to write songs has been pretty fruitful so far so I guess I’m loathed to change it. I often write the song titles first. I come up with a song title, just something that evokes a sense of mystery to me, and I’ll use that sense of mystery to encourage lyrical and musical ideas. I often write down sentences I think of randomly, have them in my lyric book and come back to them, sometimes years later, if they fit into something I am working on. The process can be very different for each song. Sometimes a song will come out of nowhere apparently fully formed after I’m just messing around on the guitar while watching a film or something, not paying attention to what my hands are doing; The Diver, Fog Round The Figurehead, and a new song called The Ghost Of Saint Paul appeared like that. The fact that this new song came out spontaneously made me realise I still had it in me to write songs.

À quoi ressemblera ton prochain album ? Sera-t-il dans la lignée de Western Lands ?
What will your next album look like? Will it be in the vein of Western Lands?

On the basis of the songs I’ve got so far I think it might be a bit more acoustic like Flashlight Seasons. But there’s definitely a rock element in a couple of the songs and I want to write at least another four songs for it so we won’t know until it’s finished. I know what it will be called but I’m not saying yet! I have ideas for the artwork too. I like having the album title before the songs are written; I often come up with an album titles a long time before the songs. The album title suggests the song titles; the song titles suggest the lyrics; the lyrics suggest the music. That’s often the way; not always, but often.

In what way have you and Gravenhurst changed since the beginning of the project?

That’s a difficult question. I’ve become more aware of which things about the industry I like and don’t like; what my weaknesses are and how I can deal with them. When it comes to touring and promoting the records I’m not a natural at it; I love performing but all the stuff that goes with it I find exhausting. But it’s a learning curve; I’m learning to deal with it. I have to appreciate how lucky I am. So many people would kill to be in my position; a professional musician with an amazing manager and a loyal following, on a good label, my work used in film and television.

To what extent are the instruments important to you? Do you use them essentially for the purpose of creation? Do you enjoy possessing instruments?

I’ve bought and sold so many instruments! I’ll buy specific things for an album, such as a Fender Jazzmaster for an album, then sell it again because I can’t afford to collect guitars. If I had kept all the guitars I’ve owned I would have around 14 guitars. The guitars I have now I wouldn’t sell though; my Epiphone Sheraton Semi was a gift from my best friend Phil; it’s a beauty. My acoustic is a Simon & Patrick. It’s not an expensive guitar but it’s what I’m used to. I know how to mic it up and make it sound good. It’s dented and scratched to bits but I love the sound. I have a Precision Bass that I put together from various bits, I love that. I also have an Epiphone Les Paul that I used a lot live around 2005-2007. Last of all I have a cheap small Spanish acoustic guitar. It was about £40. It sounds pretty good though. I inherited a Music Man Sterling bass but I hate the sound of it; I lent it to Antoni Maiovvi. I’m not a collector. I constantly sell things. I’m the opposite of a Magpie. I sold all my vinyl and I’m currently selling my CDs. The only thing I won’t sell is my books. I have loads in storage because I don’t have room for them all.

Do you feel more like a singer or a guitarist?

Definitely a guitarist. Singing doesn’t come naturally to me; I never wanted to be a singer but I couldn’t find a suitable one and I was writing songs so I had to do it. I don’t have a strong larynx. That was a central problem of singing over a loud band; I would lose my voice. At the end of a three week tour my voice collapsed at a gig in Berlin. Unfortunately there is some footage on Youtube! I sound like I’m being strangled. It’s awful. I would get throat infections quite regularly on tour. So solo shows are better for me in so many ways.

Is there a pop band or singer whose carrier is an example to you?

I guess artists who do what they want and don’t care how long it takes them. My label-mates Broadcast spend as long over their records as they feel necessary. They don’t feel the need to conform to the industry notion of releasing an album each year. Scott Walker is happy to leave it more than a decade between albums. But then he certainly has more money than I do!

What do you think about the current pop scene? Is there any artist you feel close to?

Dead Mellotron et Light Of Shipwreck.

I can’t say I listen to a lot of new music. I love Broadcast’s last record. I tend to get into bands long after they have split! There is a wealth of old music out there I have yet to hear so I seek that out. With new bands it takes a while for the hype to die down and for it to become clear whether they are actually any good or not. My Mum buys loads of new music though; she recommends stuff to me. And my brothers also buy new music. There are two artists I really like who sound like they have been listening to Flying Saucer Attack. Dead Mellotron, and Light Of Shipwreck. They are really interesting. My brother Sean recommended them to me. The last few years I have been listening to a lot of dubstep. Joker, Pinch, Peverelist, Burial, people like that.

Also, I love the metal band Mastodon and their Bristol show last year was one of the best gigs of the year even though I couldn’t actually see the stage because the venue was full beyond capacity and the room is laid out in a stupid design. It was still incredible though.

Vis-tu toujours à Bristol ? As-tu déjà eu envie de quitter l’Angleterre ?
Do you still live in Bristol? Have you ever felt like leaving England?

Yes, I’m still here. I have had thoughts about living in Berlin because it’s so cheap, and my good friend Tony (Antoni Maiovvi) lives there. But my roots are here in Bristol. It would be difficult to leave so many friends and my brothers behind. But I wouldn’t rule it out. If I was a wealthy man I would have homes in Bristol, London and Berlin!
