Not not fun is a phrase amanda used to always say when we first met describing something as « not fun, but NOT not fun ». Which sort of describes what it’s like to run a creative business in general. Itt’s a shit-ton of work, but it’s rewarding and inspiring and stimulating in a way that counter balances all that effort. As far as music being a game, we take what we do very seriously but we definitely believe in humor and playfulness and keeping a perspective on things. I consider what we release to be art on a certain level, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be presented in a stuffy, overly serious way.
Après plus de deux cents sorties en six ans, comment juges-tu votre travail ? Considères-tu toujours NNF comme un label artisanal ? With more than two hundred releases to your credit in six years, how do you judge your work? Do you still consider NNF like a bedroom label?
We still run the label with a bedroom sensibility because at our core neither of us are business-people, in terms of what interests us in this endeavor. but it’s also become a pretty professional thing and basically devours all of our time. We’re more inclined to look forwards than backwards, so it’s hard to say how we judge our work. we think everything coming is brilliant.
I think LA has a stronger influence on as people than as artists. I like the attitude of this place as a city, i don’t typically like bands or artists more when they’re from LA, but i love living here and always have.
We’re more concerned with the music on an album by album basis than we are using the releases as propaganda to assert a larger label aesthetic. I like the attitude of being a fan. You always have a taste and it threads through everything but it’s constantly changing and often times you find yourself loving an artist who makes a type of music you typically never gravitate to. We always try to stay open to that.
Amanda never wanted to start another label to promote her solo project. she’s only ever been inspired to release dance music by friends and fellow musicians who she respects and adores. she had the idea for 100% Silk the same way we first had the idea for NNF – you follow the passion, the interest, and the awesome art.
Quelle est la relation entre les groupes et NNF ? What are the relations between the bands and NNF?
Some of the artists we work with are friends, others are more email acquaintances. Some we’ve never been able to meet before because they live so far away. But it’s nice to have as human a relationship as possible when circumstances allow it.
Pocahaunted’s been broken up for years. There’s nothing in the future.
Quel est le futur proche de NNF ? What’s the near future for NNF?
